Dear Subscriber, This week I want to talk about reinvention, especially in our Second Act. I’m a huge believer in changing things up on a regular basis and especially in your later years. So much happens to us in our fifties - children leave home, women go through the menopause, some of us retire and parents increasingly need our help to care for them. But despite the challenges and uncertainties, or perhaps because of them, there is also the realisation that we have a lot more living to do. So what stops many of us from taking on new challenges and projects? My feeling is that it is a lack of confidence - that gradual erosion of self belief that often characterises our mid life, especially if we have tried to go back into the workplace and been rejected, as is all too often the case for mid life women. So what’s the answer? Well interestingly, women over 50 form the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in our economy, precisely because they are often rejected from the workplace. A case of, if you can’t join them, beat them!! And then there is that nagging question - is it all too little too late to make a change? Well let me reassure you on that one. I have spent an entire 40 year working career reinventing myself - from advertising to publishing, to TV presenting, interiors and then most recently, health, longevity and launching a sugar free snack with Virgin. Enjoying good health and having energy is key to being able to reinvent yourself, so for me, health and reinvention go hand in hand. But in fact, having a passion and sense of purpose is the greatest single predictor of longevity, above diet and exercise. So, here’s my message to you: In short, it is NEVER too late to make a change, it is healthy to do so on a regular basis, and I would dare to suggest, actually important that you do.
